Robin Maconie is the author of several definitive books on the life and work of Karlheinz Stockhausen. Maconie's "THE WORKS OF KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN" (Oxford University Press 1990 edition, new edition due soon!) first published in 1976 avoids specialist jargon and complicated analyses. Maconie's objective was "first to reconstruct the conditions under which Stockhausen worked, and then to interpret his music as a response, or rather a series of responses, to these changing conditions". The text is copiously illustrated with music examples, many of which have not been previously published.
No lover of Stockhausen's music should be without this work.
